Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis

About B. animalis subsp. lactis

Bifidobacterium animalis and Bifidobacterium lactis were previously described as two distinct species. Presently, both are considered B. animalis with the subspecies Bifidobacterium animalis subsp animalis and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis.

B. animales is a Gram-positive anaerobic rod-shaped bacterium, which can be found in the large intestines of most mammals, including humans.

Possible Benefits

In a study published by the World Journal of Gastroenterology titled: “Bifidobacterium lactis attenuates onset of inflammation in a murine model of colitis,” the authors concluded that daily oral administration of B. lactis was able to reduce inflammatory and T cells mediators and to promote regulatory T cells specific markers in a mouse model of colitis.

There is also another study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health titled “Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis fermented milk product reduces inflammation by altering a niche for colitogenic microbes.”
