Constipation

Constipation refers to bowel movements that are infrequent or hard to pass. It is a common cause of painful defecation. Severe constipation includes obstipation (failure to pass stools or gas) and fecal impaction.

Constipation is common; in the general population incidence of constipation varies from 2 to 30%.

The most common causes of constipation are a low-fiber diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and insufficient hydration. Addressing these root causes with sufficient fiber, exercise, and hydration will allow for easier bowel movements.
