Irritable Bowel Syndrome

One of the most common GI problems is Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS. It is poorly understood and only its presence can only be noticed by its symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome is not contagious, inherited, or cancerous but IBS can be highly disruptive. Imagine having to go to the bathroom spontaneously throughout the day or night.

IBS symptoms range from mild to severe but they are characterized by abdominal pain, fullness, gas, and bloating. Pain and symptoms often

  1. Occur after meals
  2. Are intermittent
  3. Are relieved after bowel movements

The most interesting fact though, is that IBS often occurs after an intestinal infection which suggests that it is related to microflora in the bowels. When bad bacteria or microbial parasites take over the intestines, they can produce toxins that the body reacts negatively to.

If irritable bowel syndrome worsens, it can lead to a more severe problem, inflammatory bowel disease or Crohn’s disease which you can read about here.
